I get that the VMA's have to change up their tone every year to adjust with what's trendy and popular. However, this year's show is by far one of the worst I've seen in a long time. I think it may be the worst VMA show I've ever seen. As soon as I heard that Miley Cirus was hosting, I knew this couldn't be a good thing. A show usually reflects the tone and personality of its host. Since Cirus is the corny, try-hard, do anything for attention type, the show was the same.
The jokes and skits were horrible and coonish. I've never seen MTV be this insensitive to any issue. For whatever reason they wanted to joke about police brutality and racism. I was waiting on them to joke about black lives matter and the confederate flag. It's obvious that MTV and Miley think that black culture is a joke.
I think this is why we should have our own award show, and I'm not talking about the BET awards. We need an award show that has everything to do with us and nothing to do with anyone else. It should be on a network that we own. Or it can air online. Then we would have full control of it. This is another reason why there needs to be more black owners in media.
Also, the performances were pretty lackluster this year. It was obvious they were going for more of a pop/mainstream, younger audience. That's cool. Im all for some pop music, but I was just bored out of my mind the entire show. AND whats with the obsession over Taylor Swift? I get the labels and the who's who in the industry are trying to make her something special. But is she really that special? I don't know. To each his own.
